Go

An ancient and deceptively simple game that is anything but simple.

Go is a game played with black and white stones on a grid of 19 by 19 squares.  The object of the game is to eliminate the other player’s pieces by completely surrounding them with your own.  The two players place one of their pieces on the board at a time, one player’s turn following the other.  Go has very simple rules, yet can be very complex when you actually sit down to play it with someone.

Go is very likely the most ancient strategy game currently played, or even known. The earliest mention of the game was found in the 4th Century BCE, written in a Chinese historical treatise which itself spanned about 250 years of history, where it is known by its original Chinese name, Wei-ch’i.  The current name for the game is the one given to it by the Japanese when it entered Japan, and given to us along with the game after Western civilization came into contact with the game.
