As a very, very broad overview:

North likes specialized vehicles with multiple complimentary vehicles in a single squad (5-6 gears or 1-3 Tanks/Strider). For weapons they make use of predominantly conventional direct fire weaponry (autocannons, bazookas, etc.), with high-tech indirect weaponry (guided missiles and such).

South Prefers more generalized vehicles, with largely homogeneous squads (4-5 gears, 1-3 Striders, 2-4 Tanks). They like high-tech direct fire weapons (fairly easy to get lasers), but dumbfire saturation indirect weaponry. (Heavy and Very Light Rocket Packs)

Peace River excels at small unit tactics (I believe that's even the name of the rule), and electronic warfare. Even their base trooper has an ECM suite. They field squads of 5 gears (with the exception of the Anti-Rover squad which is 4-5) and 1-3 Tankstriders (which as their name suggests are tank/strider hybrids).

NuCoal likes FAST. They field in squads of 5 gears, 3-4 light tanks, 1-4 heavy tanks, or 2-3 Geartanks (like Tankstriders). They will be slightly flimsier than their polar counterparts, but will outpace them in most situations. For weapons they like linked weaponry, lots of things you have to defend against multiple times. Not picky on what weapons they use beyond that.

North with its hightech indirect sounds like my cup of tea. Guided missles have the right feel for me. ....

Is it wrong that I am reminded of this when you say that? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRzMtlZjXpU

Also, there was a North starter box set at Fandom II last I checked, although this is a much, much, MUCH better deal.

They've also got a deal on Northern tanks right now - 2x Allers and 3x Klemms for $100.

I would say wait. They seem to be adding a new deal every day, case in point: Northern Armour deal(NARD for short, lol) just added today. I'm sure there will be a deal for the talons soonish.

I wouldn't really hold my breath, they seem to be focusing on the 4 "prime" factions. But then, Robert has said these sales will be valid and new ones will be added for the entire summer, so with two months (less weekends) of sales waiting to happen, anything's possible.

As to best to pair with Black Talons... really any of them. Talons are the best they are at what they do, which is stealth commando attacks & scouting. Combined with elements from any of the three TN armies they can ally with (NorGuard, SRA, and PRDF, no NuCoal sadly) they can be devastating. An Owl C3 calling in fire from a Thunderhammer, Red Bull, or Sagittaire, alongside it's regular compliment of VLFG armed Vultures, can be terrifying.

The Field Manual PDF available as the first item of the Summer of Blitz promotion is the complete games rules. In fact I think they're even more complete than the complete game rules as they adopt some errata not currently in the printed field manual (but don't quote me on that).

In fact, the complete game rules as found in Locked and Loaded are outdated because of the Field Manual. Use Locked and Loaded only to build armies.

Seems odd that they would not just update the rules in the electronic version of the main rule book so that it was current (just edit into the cover "updated with Field manual rules". I mean, that is the beauty of digital publishing. I will stop reading rules in the main rule book and use it for the fluff :) ...

I agree, Dexter. But hey, I've gotten used to it being the way it is now. There are also rumours that our friends in Montreal are going to redo each army's field guide separately. In that case, expect Locked and Loaded to be rendered obsolete except for fluff.

Until then, however, it is your bible for most of the core Terra Novan armies (North, South, Peace River). I had included Port Arthur in there, because they are in there, but the L&L version of the Port Arthur rules has been replaced by those found in the Perfect Storm book.

Not Port Arthur. The PAK rules in L&L got obsoleted with Perfect Storm. Only valid lists in L&L are North, South, PRDF, and Leagueless.

Also, the army books aren't really rumor, or if they are Robert (CEO) & John (Marketing director) from the Pod have been tricked by it.
