You mean like how they stopped saying the Dark Angels are all First Nations and the Salamanders are all African?

Can't offend anyone by making it sound like humans come in different colors, right? :)

I just read the bloodofkittens post. Close combat Obliterators, interesting.
On a related note, something about being able to spend points on terrain bugs me. I can't say why, since I don't know how it would work exactly. It's just an irrational, gnawing feeling that it might lead to in-game unit production and collection of vespene gas.

So tyranid players would have to spawn more overlords before they can make new gaunts?

You're sort of missing the point if you think that's what the problem with the Salamanders was.

By establishing that one chapter that is all-black you implicitly suggest that all other chapters are all-white (particularly when they're exclusively depicted that way in artwork and painting galleries). It was dumb, lazy, offensive tokenism, and was in fact far more "politically correct" than the alternative of scrapping the whole idea. Although, to be honest, the retcon was equally fumbled (they start out as black people, and now they're literally jet black people who have RED EYES). Jesus, what?

The idea that the entire population of a fictional planet should share a uniform appearance is part of the problem; it's not like the various ethnicities found on earth all crash-landed here from different civilizations spread out through the galaxy (although the UN would be a lot more interesting if that were true). But that's an understandable temptation for writers. If the scale of your story is galactic then it's a lot easier to treat planets like homogeneous nations than complex societies.

If I'm remembering correctly (and I may not be) the Deathwing fluff never suffered from this shortcoming. They were a single group of Dark Angels with common ancestry, and weren't meant to depict uniformity across the entire chapter.

Edit: And I realize that it's incredibly difficult to make post like this without coming off as hoity-toity and prescriptive, so forgive me. I just find buzzers going off in my head any time someone minimizes the Salamanders debacle, because I believe that it really was a terrible, intellectually-insulting slice of the 40K background.

I do like how they have made some changes to how marines look like Salamanders and Raven Guard (who from what I found are all white with black eyes). Though in my simple brain I never got into it as deep as Cory, I just always assumed it was part of the geneseed that augments and changes the Salamanders, part of that process gives them a burned / charcol look. Rather than a whole planet of people who look the same, could be either really, but a race of humans who are genetically modified who by default destroy and "cleanse" Xenos and things that are not Human... is racist at the very core no?
