i tend to disagree here, i find that even just moving a unit of models is highly rewarding, to see your little dudes get into position to either deal or eat gunfire... i haven't found the same level of satisfaction of advancing and attacking with units in any video game i've played. games today tend to be a little too easy, just walk and shoot, and a lot of games are getting to be just you walking through the environment.

some people generally don't like the time and effort in something they're only going to play casually
my friends never wanted to play because its such a huge initial investment in something they don't know they'll enjoy.
some people want something more instant, not something you need to work for a long time at, even I sometimes would prefer something I can just play out of the box, and not have to spend god knows how long building an army
kids have even less patience

First off I'll say I'm part of CA$Hs lot who dipped our hands into other games. I love 40k, I love the models, I love the fluff, I love playing against people. The rules and codex creep ruined it for me. I went from having mediocre armies in Imperial Guard and Blood Angels (who in 3rd admittedly were great) to having really competitive armies and I was stoked, until I found out that they were a bit too competitive, as was every codex that came out since Imperial Guard.

Everything about 40k = awesome, except the terrible rules. I also feel 6th edition will be a make or break for me. I am having amazing amounts of fun with Flames of War and Warmachine now and don't have many urges to play 40k, much less fantasy.

I won't bash GW much, but their constant price raises, poor implementation of resin finecast, and removal of several key hobby services (bitz program, tournaments) has me quite turned off and upset. I haven't bought new from GW in years and really have no intention to.

One aberration would be Mordheim for me. I have a group of 3 friends and we venture into the City of the Damned weekly :)
Current Project: Painting/assembling Tau
Current Playable Armies: MW & LW USA - most lists available (FoW), Space Marines (40K), Imperial Guard (40K), Cygnar (Warmachine)
Future Projects: New Marine army @ 1850 (40K), LW US Infantry Army in Winter Gear @ 1780 (FoW), LW Canadian Infantry Army @ 1780 (FoW)

I'm pretty much over it for the moment. Not planning on selling all my stuff or anything (though there will be considerable pruning come the GS Yardsale in February) but I don't think I'm going to buy anything else for a long time.

I got really pumped when Grey Knights came out, and then lost interest before I finished my first squad of plastic Termies. Worked myself up again for my counts-as GK Deathwatch army, and they're awesome, but the last tiem I played them was at the GS Skirmish in August. Dug out my Legion of the Damned army not long ago and did a 40K night at GW, but really wasn't into it. Then got a bit excited and spent some money that I probably shouldn't have on Ogres when they came out, and got bored within 3 Ogres.

At the moment I'm all over Heavy Gear (about to start my, technically, sixth army) and kinda pumped about Battletech with the recent Mechwarrior Online announcement. (Already played all the way through MW4:Mercs again and halfway through mechcommander) Though my spending on them is a bit stymied by the fact that I'm incrementally upgrading/saving up for a major computer upgrade. (I want Skyrim, but if I put the case on my desk beside my computer right now my video card would likely burst into flames )

Same thing happened to me with 40k as well. I used to play a couple of games a week on average probably but now I onyl ever play, with my younger brother, when I come home for Christams or in the summer. I wouldn't say that I had any big problem with the rules or even the cost, not that those were not big issues, it's just that you can only play some many gamse of the same game before you start to get tired of it.

I even sold 1 of my 40k armise and tossed another in the garbage, still have 2 armies left thou.

I had not played a game of Heavy Gear in quite awhile either but have recently started to get back into that 1. Even went to a Heavy Gear tournament in Montreal last weekend that was pretty cool.

Thanks;
Mike

You're the guy whose name I temporarily forgot who came to that gathering at Fandom II last month with me, An00bis, m_Janelle, and Feor, aren't you? My apologies if so.

Yes but I wouldn't really worry about it, I am shitty at remembering names myself.

General interest in 40K lost?

Postby Tokkan » Fri Nov 18, 2011 8:27 pm

I'll say this. If it weren't for the 60 hour weeks I've been putting in at school, I'd be getting in a lot more games of 40k. I enjoy the game still, just don't have the time for it right now.

(so when I do play, I don't mind playing fluffy lists, or breaking out the Tau when playing other older dexes, since if I'm playing, may as well have fun! )
40K Armies Played: Space Wolves, Space Sharks, Orks, Tau, eventually CSM (MSons + Bile)
Blood Bowl: Ought'Ta WAAAGH Roughriderz (Orcs), The North Spire Wendigoes (Norse) Iron-Wrath Krakens (Chaos Dwarfs, WIP), Scarlet Fliers (Dark Elves, WIP)
Heavy Gear Blitz/Arena: Peace River Defence Force, Paxton Gears in Arena
Necromunda: MacGuffin's Marauders (Van Saar)
Malifaux:Built: C.Hoffman Boxed: Rasputina, Pertitia, some extra models for both

(I'm Mike, by the way. Easier to remember than Tokkan, probably. DEFINITELY easier to pronounce)

Hey Guys!

I'm definitely a lifer in terms of 40K, been playing since high school, which for me was back when Dark Millenium was first released (3rd ed? 1995-ish?). I like the fluff, the models, but the footslogging game has become mechanized, faster, and with competitive broken units rather than balanced regular ones. Also given my lack of time to invest grotesque amounts of time in the hobby my armies grow little and get painted little by little. I still enjoy going to tournaments because it gives me motivation to paint and get things done, meet people, see conversions, and perhaps pull a Neo out of the rabbit hole every so often. Socially, playing with friends every so often is a good time, and that is what I use 40K for these days. I do have reservations and a growing disbelief that the game will be all right. I'm worried that units and play styles I like, and have spent money, time, and energy assembling, converting, and painting will be thrown by the wayside when GW next revamps their ruleset because of market forces (ie: they wanna make money). To me this interferes with the reason the hobby exists and if they go too far I will find other things that do the same things for me that I can enjoy - be that video games, card games, or other tabletop gaming systems.

I'm crossing my fingers for 6th ed, but also getting ready to hit the interwebs to sell my stuff if the game becomes too unreasonable.

That's ok - if there's anything that was made obvious by the previous Saturday's get-together, I'm rather horrid at remembering rules, myself. ;)
