ive played about four or five games now with my Tau. I dont think ive won a game yet...tbh... but here are a few things that help:

Overwatch, obviously, self explanitory when you think about battlesuits. moving 2d6 in the assault phase with jetpacks is awesome. warlord traits (particularily the Command table) help, the new rapid fire rules make fire warriors worthwhile again. the new nightfight rules are fantastic, and i have some gear that lets me straight up ignore it, rather than making my odds of seeing better like before. so now I can operate rather unhindered at night, while my opponent struggles to get clear shots on my farther units. space magic and ally combos have me worried, but I think ill figure it out eventually. first time i rolled to resist a power i rolled that 6! even that helps. i went from being able to do nothing to a one in six chance of stopping it, so ill take what i can get :) all in all, its much more enjoyable to play tau, I dont feel so screwed all the time.
Armies
Tau Empire, Sa'Cea Specialized Warfare Expeditionary Fleet I'm gonna have to count this again
Imperial Guard, The Brotherhood of Nod 2,500 pts
Chaos Space Marines, (Alpha Legion) The Hydrafire Enclave 2,000 pts

All joking aside, it's real awesome to see you so excited about your tau again :)
