I'm leaving tomorrow for a pretty decent road trip to PAX East (also doing the tourist thing in Boston so we're going a few days early).
I was just curious if anyone else from the forum is going to PAX East this year?

My thing with Videogame Cons are that everything there can be easily found on the net the day after or at EB Games, though the guest speakers might be neat to see live.

Dude, you don't go there for the announcements. E3 maybe, but not PAX. You go to PAX to hang out and play video games with 18 hundred bajillion other video gamers, to see a live Jonathan Coultan, Paul & Storm, or DJ Front-a-lot concert, and to bask in the wonder and the glory of the sheer amount of awesome that can barely be contained in one building.
I personally won't be attending any out of town cons this year, just due to finances & vacation time (or lack thereof) at work. I'll be constrained to Game Summit and Can Games (and the Comic Con if I get lucky and have that weekend off, they didn't announce it until after we'd booked vacation for the year).
I'm seriously considering some rationing of money and more careful planning for next year (when I'll have enough tenure at work for another week of vacation) to try and get to GenCon. I'm not much of a vije-oh gamer, so I'd be much more interested in things like that and Temple-con. (in Providence, has a strong Heavy Gear presence from what I hear)

Feor nailed it. For me the point of the conventions isn't necessarily for the announcements and retailers (although I was quite surprised at how little was 'for sale' at PAXEast compared to FANExpo), but basically to just hang out with thousands and thousands of like-minded people.
I sat in on a bunch of panels (the closest I got to wargaming was a panel on the future of strategy games) and came home with a ton of game names to research. Coolminiornot had a booth there so I picked up a couple little things from them and just generally hung out in the tabletop when I wasn't in a line or wandering the expo floor.
They gave out M:TG decks in each of the swag bags so there were tons of people playing it all weekend in line ( I haven't played seriously in years, but it was neat to see the mix of people who were into the game..)
Here's how it all ended... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvEWaSgRA8U (the sound sucks for the first minute, but gets better after that..)
