Hydra Flak Tanks

Postby ThisGuy! » Thu May 17, 2012 9:42 am

Hey all,
I've seen some rather interesting conversions from you guys on this site, so i thought i'd ask, do you have any idea how i can create am IG hydra flak tank on the cheap?

i've acquired 2 basilisks, and i can use those as a base, and i could get the Aegis Defence Line (15$ on ebay but just the cannon without the base, or 30$ new in store) but that's for one, so i'm looking at about 30$ dollars, plus extra parts for the base to put it on, plus shipping and possibly customs.

i also have a couple of hellhounds that i thought could make an interesting conversion, since i find they look awesome... but i may want to hold on to those. now i'm an IG player and new at that, so i know nothing of the other armies, short of a dreadnought.

my options would then be the Aegis defence line, the forgeworld conversion kit (too expensive for my wallet) and creating the gun out of spare parts. i created Twin Linked Lascannons for my Vendetta, but this is a bit different.

do any other armies have parts i could use to create a flak tank? Have any of you undetaken this conversion and have good ideas or suggestions for me? Anything would help :)

Many Thanks,
ThisGuy!

I find the Aegis Defense Line kits just look terrible as a hydra conversion. When put side by side to an actual hydra it looks like a bad joke.

One conversion I'm working on, still figuring out a couple specifics for the ammo feeds is to use twin punisher cannons (or quad if you want) from forgeworld. 2 cannons plus belt fed ammo drums is like £10 so not far off your goal and I would imagine it would be a mean looking AA tank.

i took a look at them and they're not bad, but they feel more like railguns than autocannons.

but yeah, 4 of those would look pretty bad-ass.

Thanks for the info Joyous. :)

Another alternative I have seen some do is to modify a Sentinel chassis to mount on the tank and then operate as the core of a turret for the Aegis guns. You might want to look into a replacement for the barrels to get the extended look, but that's one I've seen done.

I have an Aegis Hydra, and I did a little filling on mine to get it to look a little more solid - I put the turret base on the artillery plate, and then filled in around it with bondo so it has a fully joined in look. I also put a radar unit on the forward structure to give it some more credence.

i never thought about the sentinel chassis. that is indeed an interesting proposal, seeing how there's a seat for the lucky guy firing those quad cannons or you put a closed top chassis with a radar as you had mentioned. one could then create a quad cannon to go on the side of and not on both sides (the left side is the door to the chassis.) i don't know why i didn't think of this before, but now thanks to Sauragnmon, i can't wait to go home and play with my toys... i mean convert my tanks!!!

If you want to Aegis, grab some plasticard tubes and extend/widen the guns a bit. I love the sentinel cockpit idea...hmmm.

If Blood Angels players don't like the turrets on their Storm Ravens, using those might be a route to go as well!
40K Armies Played: Space Wolves, Space Sharks, Orks, Tau, eventually CSM (MSons + Bile)
Blood Bowl: Ought'Ta WAAAGH Roughriderz (Orcs), The North Spire Wendigoes (Norse) Iron-Wrath Krakens (Chaos Dwarfs, WIP), Scarlet Fliers (Dark Elves, WIP)
Heavy Gear Blitz/Arena: Peace River Defence Force, Paxton Gears in Arena
Necromunda: MacGuffin's Marauders (Van Saar)
Malifaux:Built: C.Hoffman Boxed: Rasputina, Pertitia, some extra models for both

(I'm Mike, by the way. Easier to remember than Tokkan, probably. DEFINITELY easier to pronounce)

And in all honesty the Storm Raven looks better without the turret anyways.

QFT. I'll never, ever, ever put a turret on the Storm Raven. Ever.

I dont get it. why? so it has LOS problems.... just raise the weapons on the swivel point and it can aim down more..... it looks really cool imo.

Imperial Guard, The Brotherhood of Nod 2,500 pts
