Have never tried any of the others (never really had a use for them, and thought that basing with them would be stupid). So no comparisons unfortunately.

Having used them I can see them being used for basing and weathering quite well though.

I haven't used them, I've stopped buying mini's and mini related products since I've got such a pile to go through already. BUT! If you go to an art store, they usually have the texture mediums on a display board, so you can see how they look dried and/or painted. So you can just pick what you need, if you're wanting to go that route.

If the comment is sarcasm- I dont know, I dont think it hurts for GW to offer suggestions, in fact I think its helpful since most people who start want to paint the way GW does. Or aspire to be as good as GW eavy metal painters.

GW is just doing what most hobbyists want, paint recipes, what colours do you use, and what order, how do i do that? In a simple straight up format when you go and buy paints. It lets you make a purchase quicker. Space marine models, ultramarine theme, paints to do them like GW? Yes please!

If not sarcasm- It certainly wont make anyone better at painting, neither does switching paint brands, or using washes, or any of that stuff, but getting better takes work, and they cant really offer "hard work" as a product or no one would buy it! :p

At least thats how i see it

I wasn't aware that gw showing paint recipes, switching paint brands and using washes made people bad/lazy painters either...

Heh... I think both of you guys would agree that GW is giving novice or less experienced painters a leg up towards the goal of good-looking paintjobs on their models. I think you both also agree that Van Gough did not become one of the most well-known painters in history by following a formula out of a book.

If you're a young/inexperienced painter or just someone who wants to get the most impressive visuals with the least actual learning/trial and error, these formulas are a godsend. If you want to become great or even find a unique visual identity, you'll need to put in the hard work that Alex mentioned. What's nice is: No matter what kind of painter you're looking to me, the GW paints can play a role if you want them to.

You clearly misunderstand my intentions. I was expressing my view of both sides of the picture. I have no issues with either side, and was defending both.

You think Van Gogh became a great painter by copying a formula from a book?

When I tried it in the store, I didn't find a whole lot of texture to the paint. Gimme pumice gel from Golden Art Supply any day.

Ah. I see. Well, he was a bit short on Golden Demons, I'll grant you that. :)
