This FAQ just broke fantasy

Postby G-Ram » Wed Jul 06, 2011 7:50 pm

So here is one of the updated faq's from the warhammer rulebook FAQ section:
Q:Does a TO WOUND roll of a 1 always fail to wound?
A:No. Though it is very rare for a model to be able to wound on a 1+

Imagine this: Flaming sword of ruin is cast on a unit of sword masters, who have entered combat against dark elf warriors with spears. The sword masters hit on 3's (with a re roll) and then wound on 2's (strengh 5 vs toughness 3) normally the sword masters require a 2+ to wound, but flaming sword increases the wound roll by +1 and according to the faq a 1+ would wound automatically since a roll of a one on the roll to wound will not always fail when it requires a 1+.

There you go, one of the most basic concepts of the game has become rediculous.

That has always been a founding concept that nothing is certain. There is always a "fail" and "pass" number needed on a die roll.

Not true. In some editions a 1+ armour save meant you did not need to roll your save.
PLAYS: Daemons, Tomb Kings, Beastmen, Chaos Warriors, High Elves, Wood Elves (fantasy), Imperial Guard, Adeptus Titanicus (Epic), Eldar, Craftworld Eldar (BFG).

Interesting? Which editions where armor saves could be automatically passed if its +1?

I believe 4th or 5th, the editions blur a bit for me. It had the wording that if you have a 1+ armour save, you automatically pass and do not need to roll.

Also remember, before 8th it was impossible to wound someone whose toughness was 4 higher than your strength.

It must of been 4th edition, that was before my time! I should lookup that rulebook and read it over!

needing a 1+ to wound is so rare and with the already high casualty rate and the fact that there's other things that ignore rolling to wound entirely (poison for example)

I'm not really all that surprised. Its not like it'll be all that common, since no matter how high your strenght to toughness is you'll still need a two so only getting a 1+ is within the realms of magic and characters.

You are completely correct, it is a rare case where this is applicable. Its just surprising that such a core aspect of the game ie rolling to wound has become like this. :(

From my understanding that only works for shooting right now, I can understand someone trying to argue it carries over but rules as written the FAQ was for shooting attacks NOT close combat.

There I fixed the game ;)

Except that in the main rule book, they state to use the wound rules for shooting as the ones for close combat since it is one chart that follows the same rules.
