Alternative Models for Flames of War???

Postby shilek101 » Wed May 16, 2012 7:34 pm

Greetings everyone,

Hey I just got into Flames of War. Like literally, last night. I still have the old 2nd edition rulebook I read a whole lot, along with "Eastern Front" and "North Africa" so I understand the game decently. Plus some of it is like Warhammer 40K. I also have some Zvezda miniatures, the tanks are nice, the rest is pretty much crap.

I was curious though: for Flames of War events, is there some fundamentalist hard-line approach to what models are okay? Like in Warhammer 40K, you either use Games Workshop models or you do not get to play generally. That is how I have seen it enforced almost everywhere for almost 2 decades now.

Is that how Flames of War works? Or can a person save money (quite a bit) and buy Zvezda or Plastic Soldier Company models instead? I understand the infantry would have to be based differently, but the tanks are basically what you see is what you get, right?

If anyone can answer me with some authority, I would greatly appreciate it. I am a brand new member to the global flames of war community and I love the game, I just need to know what models to buy.

Thanks!

You can use any manufactures miniatures in any Flames of War event.

The only exceptions:

1 - Don't talk about other companies miniatures on FoW official forum

2 - Based properly for infantry / guns

3 - What You See, What You Get

4 - Must be in the scale 15mm / 1:100

Greetings,

Thanks Gahris! Also, thank you for the sticky page there with all the manufacturers. When I build my army, I am mostly likely going to use as many Zvezda and Plastic Soldier Company tanks as I can, combined with battlefront infantry. Although the Zvezda tanks are a little low quality, they are so dirt cheap.

I made my Zvedza stuff look just as good as Plastic Solider by using extra stowage, crew, bits and replaced the barrels with brass rod.

Greetings,

That is a good idea. I was thinking of a more high end version of the same thing: of using Warhammer green stuff/liquid green stuff to add more texture and feel to the tanks. Your way is probably a lot easier. Right now, I am looking at either using almost entirely plastic soldier/battlefront stuff or using that other company called www.gamolds.com. There models look great but I feel like I would have to buy them all from that one place, every single one of my stuff, so that way it would not look out of place. You know what I mean?

I am going to try to get into some Flames of War tournaments, but there do not seem to be any at all. I live just south of Cornwall, so of course rochester and syracuse are too far. I am going to the Nova Open and might play flames of war there. Also, there is that summer siege tournament. I am on the waiting list there.

Flames of War is so darn awesome looking! I cannot wait to play.

Hello Shilek and welcome back into the flames of war fold.

First thing I'd recommend you do, is get a 3rd edition rule book. The game has changed enough that you'll find it a bit refreshing but not so foreign it's a new game to learn.

Next, decide the period you want to play, be it early, mid or late war.

For models you are on the right track. Plastic soldier company makes some awesome models and for about $1 more per tank than Zvedza they are totally worth it. Battlefront is still the best but it can get pricey if you are doing a lot of tanks/vehicles.

You mentioned tournaments also and I can say we have a pretty good tourney scene. There are two tournaments in Petawawa a year (one was last month) and our gaming group 'Dice Devils' plan to run at least two tourneys a year as well with our first one either very close to sold out or completely full by now (it's in early July). CanGames is also running a tourney this year at the convention, so that could be worth checking out.

Mind you our tournament scene is still growing as we continue to grow the Flames of War community in Ottawa and surrounding areas.

Finally, I know you are out of town, but if you'd like to play a few games with either your own models or a borrowed army, we can usually arrange a few people to do demo games in Ottawa.

Welcome back comrade, we've been expecting you :)

Hey Joyous Oblivion,

Thanks for the welcome! I am going to have the new rulebook very soon. I missed out on the whole trade thing the company sponsored, so I do not have the nice little rulebook. I am just going to get the big one, screw it. It is so pretty, I figure it is worth the extra money. I did read the 2nd edition one and I have been surfing the web like nuts (including the boot camp video series) to learn as much of the game as I can before I get the rulebook.

Now as for deciding what period to play.....heresy! I am going to play them all. I am starting out with a pair of late war armies and one early war army and my goal is to have a pair of armies for each period. I rather play all three at once, with a focus on mid/late war. They are so cool. The nova open has one of their tournaments as blitzkrieg, so that is why I am going to do that.

Battlefront looks awesome. I wish I could just get their models but then this project is going to run up into the 1000 dollar region, so that is a no-go. Their infantry are definitely the best though, as far as what I have seen.

Hey thanks for the awesome welcome. I will send you a private message in a minute about the tourneys, I definitely want to attend as many as possible.

Thanks!!!
