Flames of War newbie questions

Postby shilek101 » Fri May 18, 2012 9:41 pm

Greetings,

I have a few questions for the active members of this Flames of War community. Here we go:

1) Does the book "Blitzkrieg" have Soviet forces in it? (this is early war)
2) how do Tank armies ever do anything at all against infantry? Infantry can be concealed, dig trenches and go to ground, so wouldn't they be near invincible? This is confusing. I want to buy what I like but I do not want to buy stuff that will never win.
3) What is the point of playing Russians if you just use lend lease models?
4) What is the point of mechanized infantry??

Thanks bro's

1) No

2) I've always had success machine gunning the crap out of infantry, and then assaulting them

3) Even with Lend-lease forces, Soviets will outnumber an American army even if it was Sherman VS Sherman, or British if it was Matilda VS Matilda. Soviet force is the most unique army I find in Flames of War and can do alot of stuff other armies cannot. They can do a horde style army, or a more elite guard army with nice equipment.

4) Mech infantry are generally better equipped then the normal "foot" soldiers. German grenadiers are MG/RIfle teams, where Panzergrens are MG teams. Mech infantry are basically the combined forces type army. They are still cheap enough point wise to field a diverse army while being much more mobile then infantry. From a German standpoint, you can also do a Gertepanzergren force while still having a decent amount of Panzer tanks backing you, and you count as a "mech" army so you defend alot more! American mech force with halftracks, I think is very powerful while being all purpose at the same time. Mech forces are also recon armies which can be fun to play as well!

Greetings,

Drat. I was hoping to play the same two armies in both early/mid/late war. Does "Blitzkrieg" really only have French, Poles, Germans and British???? Thanks for the helpful information.

1) no, there are no Early War soviet forces...yet...
2) tanks do just fine FoW is a game of Objectives you can win just by out maneuvering the other guy and where Infantry have to stay still and give up shooting to get most of their defensive boosts the tank's armor comes with
3) it's historical, and the only way to get a unit of 10 Sherman tanks but keep in mined no one is making you use lend lease
4) Mobility a half track/wheeled truck on a road can go 18" that's 3 times what an infantry team can a Jeep can go 24" that's half the table

I see your point with having armies that can do all 3 periods i started with american airborne and ofcourse they were not in early war so i figured this time i will think ahead i looked on teh FOW store site that lists beside models E M L for thier usage and now this coming tuesday i will feild for the first time for me ever a german force of Falshimjager and although i will need to get some extra units once i go late with them it is simply because they had better ones as the war went on...

Most armies can do early/mid or mid/late war with a similar force

There's an off-rumoured Barbarossa book that will deal with the Eastern Front coming out in the next year.

note: BF has split the time periods as EW 1939-41 and MW 1942-43. The invasion of USSR was summer of 1941

The problem is that the forces in the two fronts don't really match up so balancing one vs the other will be very tough.

That works a bit better with infantry based lists than armoured lists imho. Also double check lists on http://easyarmy.com before buying!

for example: Germans will use PzIII and PzIVs in both mid and late war. But! only the Front Armour 6 variants (not FA5); and tanks that could make decent forces with in LW (Panther/Tiger/etc) are those tiny & and one trick pony lists in MW.

Easy army costs money.. the following website does not: http://fowlists.blogspot.ca/
"Yo Dennis" - some loser

"This is a game like real war, played against time, and played under circumstances of considerable excitement, and it is remarkable how elastic the measurements of quite honest and honourable men can become." - HG Wells, Little Wars, 1913!
