Magic, metal, the sound of grinding steel, and the smell of burning coal.

Think magic users that control steam powered robots.
There's 4 official factions

Khador who are big and Russian like
Cryx Undead that worship a dragon (and they have undead pirates)
Menoth Desert dwelling religious zealots
Cygnar More world war 1 like Americans with trenchers and lots of ranged attacks

Then you can play Mercs, mercs have various lists, one of which is Pirates, the Rhuls (dwaves), and a few other combination

They're also working on a new faction of elves.

Warmachine itself is compatible with it's sister game Hordes, which is Magic users who control giant warbeasts...

Their factions are

Circle of Orborros which are nature controlling druids
Trollbloods all sorts of trolls and their kin
Skorne a race of creatures that are kinda like a mix of Klingons and Dark Elves who control elephant like warbeasts and are all about pain
Legion of Everblight blighted winter elves with mean monsters (they're based off an other dragon)

Fun game, quite easy to play, but Privateer Press has rewritten the rules and stats and will be releasing the new rule book and faction books later this year.

Do we know which day the tournament will be? Will it be Hordes and WM or just WarMachine? and how many pts etc...

Right now it looks like it would be on the Saturday (29th of August) and would be a 500 point Steamroller 4 which should be a mix of both Hordes and WM

The Legion box set is 270 points
If you were to add say full unit of Blighted Swordsmen and blighted archers, you're up to 463 add a Harrier you're at 494

If you want to get to 500 with less to paint... I'd suggest something like

Box set
Forsaken (1 mini)
Shepherd (1 mini)
Warmongers (3 minis)
Full Raptors (5 cavalry)

Comes to 493

(no I don't know these by heart, I'm using tabletop commander :)
