2 player board game suggestions

I'm looking for suggestions for some board games that can be played with two players. So far, my girlfriend likes settlers, killer bunnies and munchkin, but I'd like something a little more like settlers, in that it's not so much a versus game as it is a race to winning sort of game. What do you guys like?

Arkham Horror. It's like a cross between an RPG and board game. My wife and I play a couple investigators apiece (recommended). It's on the verge of being prohibitively complicated and crazy difficult but it's co-operative and you're fighting the Ancient Old Ones of the Cthulhu Mythos! It'll take 2-3 not so enjoyable playthroughs to get comfortable with the rules. Forewarned is forearmed !

Have you tried the Rivals for Catan card game? 2 players and surprisingly fun. It gives you a bit more control over the game, where Settlers often leaves me feeling completely at the mercy of chance.

Best of all, it is really inexpensive (mine was something like $20 at Fandom).

Two games off the top of my head are:

Dominion. It's a great game, can be played with two people, but 3 or 4 is best. You can get the full game free for the iPad, but only in one player.
Full House, an hotel game where you try an upgrade your hotel to attract higher paying guest, to pay for more upgrades, repeat. 2-4 players. Fun, but a little on the simplistic side (like Life or Payday).

My wife enjoys both games, but probably Dominion more because it has a little more strategy.

I second the motion for Dominion. Small World would work too. Monkhouse and his wife have been raving about it lately too.
