Chaos Warrior Tactics

not sure if this belongs here (can be moved if necessary)

but i was just wondering what the general opinion is on the use of chaos warriors. that is the size of the unit, the armament and what they should try to accomplish in the game

they seem like kind of a difficult unit to use in my opinion as they cost a lot /model but are technically core ranked infantry

anyway, any comments would be pretty cool to start up sort of a discussion

ps. right now, my theory is to have a unit of ~18, 6x3 with great weapons and the mark of tzeentch but that seems like an extremely big point sink for a none center piece unit...

IMO those warriors either need a ward save from shooting(blasted standard) or the mark of nurgle, otherwise any army with decent shooting would cripple your 300+point unit in a couple turns

Screening your unit with hounds (not such a bad idea anymore as you can re-roll failed panic tests now) can also work.

I think hand weapon and shield is now the best combintion. 3+ save vs shooting and Toughness 4, they will not get seriously hurt by anythign but war machines. Combined with the mark or nurgle or Tzentch/and/or the blasted standard, they will get accross the table. (mark of Tzentch with the blasted standard gives you a 4+ ward save against shooting, woot).

To me, chaos warriors should be used aggessively, march them right into the middle of the enemy army. Try to entice weak enemy units to flank charge you (you will win anyways, chaos warriros are that good). Empire detachments, skaven slaves/clanrats, elven spearmen, these types of units can easily be fended off even if they charge you on the rear or side. This allows your cavalry/etc to interecpt his elite units instead of worrying about the other stuff.

thanks for the replies

basically i'm trying to avoid the 300 point unit

so i guess 12 strong 6 wide with hand weapons and shields eh?

how do you think that unit would stand up vs 25 orcs hand weapon/shield 5x5?

or is it unreasonable to expect them to beat up or at least tie a unit like that?

also, should anybody ever take chosen??????

The problem with a 12 strong unit is that it can be broken too easily if it is charged by something half way decent (heavy cavalry, ogre sized models, etc..). I would personally go with 15 strong units.

well the difference between 12 strong and 15 strong is probably ~60 points depending on weapons

and the shape of the unit would be different, losing frontage in the front

or should i just have a unit of like 23 with a character?

but then i feel like i'd need some sort of banner and it'd be a centerpiece unit for sure...
