Be Courteous & Butt Out

Postby Orbital » Sat Feb 21, 2009 4:09 pm

Not a big deal or something scary, but I wanted to mention this:

If someone posts an item for sale here in the Marketplace area (whether it's gaming or not) and asks for $X, please respect the asking price unless you're actively interested in buying the item and want to haggle or negotiate (which I prefer is done in PM anyhow). If you absolutely feel the need to respectfully inform the seller that an item typically sells for less/more, do it in a PM. This is a place where things get bought and sold. It's not a general discussion forum and "throwing in your two cents" about deals in which you aren't going to be participating is something I'd like to see less of. I would prefer that sellers and buyers don't feel like they have to explain themselves. If the price is too high/low, then the buyer/seller can walk away if they want to and that's between the parties involved and not the peanut gallery.

Why not? Because I've seen a lot of threads derailed by someone who (for whatever reason) feels the need to brow-beat a seller over their price even if they have no intention of buying. I've seen threads degenerate into a seller feeling like they have to explain why they're asking X instead of Y. I've seen threads were a couple of people (or more) will harass the seller by telling them their item goes for much less on Ebay and, after the thread has been strangled by bickering over it, then they turn out to be wrong. Honestly, Marketplace isn't a discussion area where we're all meant to bat opinions back and forth. There are other places on Deep Space for that. This is for something else.

As a seller, you have a right to drop a single plastic Tac Marine on the table and ask for $100. Despite how it may seem to some, that's not a decision which is made by committee or subject to peer review. If someone is looking to buy it, that's between those two parties. Caveat emptor, as Battlemaster said. Buyer beware. Everyone else can zip it.

Orbital...

I can see your point, to an extent, but...

As to the above quoted comment, I would disagree. This is a community... a lot of people here know each other, look out for each other. 'Caveat Emptor', while applicable to a certain extent, is not a rule of law, and in common society you wouldn't be considered very much of a friend if you stood by and watched someone get greatly overcharged for something. Sure, you have a right to ask a price for something... but if it's really exagerated I would think a community like this would have a right to point that out.

It's all about balance, though; civility and tact cost nothing.

That's how I see it, anyway.

I wouldn't disagree that it can be done in a respectful fashion and that there are exceptions to every rule. That having been said, there are a lot of comments that aren't made in the helpful, supportive way you mentioned... and of the few that are, many of those could be done in PM. Of the comments which are left, almost none are telling the seller anything that they either don't already know or couldn't find out with ease if they wanted to. Please believe me when I say that I'm not trying to squash the helpful community atmosphere; what I'm trying to do is make sure that the Marketplace is a venue that a seller can use without having to feel like they're going to have to explain themselves. My worst fear is that someone is going to be reluctant to post in the Marketplace because they don't feel like it's worth it to put up with the peanut gallery.
