Day 7:
  • Put some magnets in the feet of the arachnids. Doesn't really deserve a pic.

They're a little weak for the job, I may have to change them out for larger ones, but I'll probably play a game with them first and see how it works.

In other news, Professor Layton has been eating my brain.

Day X:
  • Realized that counting the days was a bad plan. No more of that.
  • Touched up Ramos and varnished him. It went on a little glossy, but I toned most of it down with brush-on matte. I think the gloss goes well on the coat, but I might change my mind later.
  • Played a game against Pylon, went long as we worked our way slowly through the rules. Was fun, but we had to call it on time.

Pictures of Ramos to follow, once I have a few spare moments.

  • Build my Eyebot, he'll proxy the Mobile Toolkit until I get the bits to convert him into one.
  • Primed the spiders.
  • Finished Ramos and Varnished him.

Yeah, his leg really does look like that, if you shine a bright light and look close. I totally missed that when painting him.

Also, I think I held the can too close, things got far more glossy than I expected. Other minis I've been spraying aren't nearly as shiny.
It's mostly in appropriate areas, so I think I'll leave it for a bit and see how it works out.

I think he came out great. The glossy seems to highlight where the light would shine.

I have to agree the picture before the gloss made me go meh but the gloss in my opinion help the model a lot.

I think you're both underestimating the touch-ups that happened before the varnish. Either way, I'm happy he turned out for the better.

  • One Steampunk Arachnid

I've decided to paint these guys one-by-one. This guy turned out very crude. I'm going to have to refine my ability to do subtle work with metallics. Also, the blue I used was too dark, I need a more moderate and thinner blue.

Here's two images of the same guy, one without flash, one with. Metal went on a lot better on this guy, but it still looks so... rough.

Anyone know a way to make metals look more smooth?

Unless you're looking for more a jewelry effect I'd suggest making it look more rough. Add a few deeper colour spots to look like shallow dents, some rust marks around the edges etc. Think of a car that has been well used, it has a lot of character just like a warring armor plate would.

Do you mean the surface looking rough? It's very hard with metallics. You may have to experiment with other brands, or just work in thinner coats.
