New player. 2000pt High Elves

Postby David_Rawes » Sun Jul 03, 2011 8:35 pm

Howdy!

I've just recently started playing warhammer fantasy. I haven't had a game yet, but I've started building and painting my High Elf army. I'm aiming for a starting 2000points. Any and all feedback, advice, and criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Lords:
(415) Prince on a Griffen with sword of might, armor of caledor, and guardian Phoenix.

Heroes:
(150) Mage level 1, Silver wand, armor of caledor, jewel of dusk. High lore magic.

Core:
(313) Spearman; 32 with Champion, Standard bearer, and musician.

(197) Archers; 16 with Musician and light armor.

(155) Sea guard; 10 with champion, Standard bearer, Musician, and shields.

Special:

(330) Swordmasters; 20 with champion, standard, and musician.

(224) Silver Helms; 8 with champion, standard, musician and shields.

(112) Reavers; 5 with Bows, and musician.

Rare:
(100) Bolt Thrower

Total: 1996

The idea is to use the spearman, sword masters and seaguard as the driving force down the centre, with the silver helms trying to flank what ever is meeting the main mass. The Reavers are there to try and take out any pesky warmachines.

Hey, welcome to Warhammer ! to bad you chose high elves and not the beloved (or hated) DRUCHII
Anyway, onto the list:
Looks like you have a solid starting list, but here are some ideas for you to consider. First of all, in this edition big blocks of infantry are extremely important. So i recommend consolidating your points into a few units. Lothern sea guard are amazing (like crazy awesome) when put in large units since they can fight in 4 (yes 4!!!) ranks when they get charged, which allows you to get a lot of attacks after they can usually stand and shoot. So maybe drop the archers can use the points for more seaguard. You also definatly want to upgrade your level 1 to a level 2, since otherwise you are going to be on the receiving end of a lot of nasty magic if your opponent brings a level 4. The silver helms are going to be better served in a unit of 10 so they can flank and break ranks, but this is not mandatory as long as you use them to support charge with your infantry and don't get tempted into running them off into combats that they wont win. For these suggestions, drop the bolt thrower as it is not very competitive compared to the other warmachines in the game, and use it for more infantry/the level 2 upgrade.
You might want to double check the points cost for your Lord, 415 seems points heavy, but otherwise I am sure he will be a beast. Reavers are great at taking out warmachines and try and keep them near by an opponent's unit that you want to stall for a turn since you can angle them to force that unit to charge them, leaving that unit out of position to overun, or forced to overrun if they are frenzied.
Hope this helps :)

just a note on your strategy, I've always found high elves to be best when they make their opponent come to them. They have the ability to play very offensive but they really shine on defensive and reactionary tactis I find.

You may want to consider holding your main masses of troops back and set up the flanks for when your enemies infantry come to you. This tactic also leaves you with sufficient time to soften up units with your shooting, don't expect to wipe full units of infantry but pulling off a rank or two is very doable and will help immensely when you get down to the fighting.

BTW welcome to the hobby, and have fun wiv it :D

Tatz is making the right call here on High elf tactics. I just want to add that when you play with this list, never play fair. As a dedicated dark elf player, I know that elf infantry is point cost heavy and easy to kill, so you need to pick your targets and work towards killing them one or two at a time. So by playing in either extreme (offensively or defensively) this becomes easier to achieve, because in straight one on one fights, and some bad dice rolls, and elf units crumble apart, compared to the lesser races who can take a beating. But elves can be fast and apply a lot of pressure to a certain part of the battlefield, so as Tatz said, by playing defensively you can react to your opponent whic will allow you to have the control of the game that you need to take advantage of elves.

Just let u know, the 2 guys who is giving u advices are a dread DE enemy of ancient, and another is greedy empire scum, so don't listen to them as they only want ur precious!

Just remember to go all out and have fun, win or lose doesn't matter at end of the day. :)

P.S. 2 suggestions:
1. Eagle is better than Reavers in most cases.
2. rather than Silver helm, make points for Dragon prince instead, SH was never a top choice in HE army, then again all Calv in this edition isn't as good as they use to be.

I may not play High elves but I do know how to beat them, on the flip side I also know how they can beat me. The advice I gave was solid, you should try taking it newborn, who knows maybe you'll win a few ;)

lol !
Just wanted to add that when it comes to warmachine hunters, both reavers and great eagles serve the role very well. Eagles will crush most crew in combat and they can fly into redirect quite easily, but reavers can start shooting from turn one and with some lucky dice roles (and good magic) be able to start killing warmachines from the beginning, instead of turn 2 , where for elves, a lot of damage can be done. Just fyi, usually target stone throwers first, since they can make a mess of elf infantry, instead of cannons who are better for heavy infantry and monsters.

I's down to personal choice I guess, Reaver can shoot, but they r not DE riders, they don't get that many shot and you have to pay for the bow, which make them so expensive and most time you only get 1 wound out of it if you roll average and above, and eagle is a lot survivable if you don't get first turn or if you can't out outmaneuver your opponent. Above all it is a lot cheaper and in combat it does better.

As a WE player I have to say that the eagle as a Warmachine hunter in 8th is very good. The fact that it can stomp at the end if fantastic.

As for your list all the advice is good. Seaguard are beasts and I have taken them on a few times in 8th and they can really hurt. You can't go wrong with adding a few more of them that is for sure.

Can't wait to see some pics of your army, keep us posted...
