I've only been in for less than 3 years, so I can't speak for the lifers; I've been having a great time with 40k. Even with all the negativity swirling around it, all the complaints and internet opinions, even with GW shooting themselves in the foot so the shareholders can have a nice dividend, I tend to not let it affect me. I ask myself: am I still having fun? do I still enjoy building and painting these models? is it ok if 2/3 lists I play against are devastating?

The answer to all is, for now, yes.

I just wish matt ward would shoot himself in the foot.

I like 5th edition 40k just fine, it's all about finding good people to play against. I agree with gahris though that 1500 is just right and going higher doesn't always make for a better game.

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Big games are fun every now and again but they get exhausting if they're the norm. I've really been enjoying 1500 because it's hard to cheese out on stuff without losing balance (not fluffy balance but "I don't have enough troops now" balance).

I think interest in these hobbies wax and wane. I took a year's hiatus from the hobby but the new tyranid release brought me back with a vengeance. Even if I get out of it for years I'll never sell my stuff because I know I'll eventually return to it.

Was wondering why we hadn't heard from you since your first outing. Feel free to drop me a PM if you want to come out and play/watch a game or two. You can borrow one of my armies...

i have a 40k army that i bought about a year ago, but honestly haven't found too much time to play, and GW was pretty far from where i live, but the hobby i absolutely love, i painted about 95% of my army. i don't fully understand the rules yet, i'm working on that.

it does seem like everyone wants to play big games (1875-2000pts). i'd be willing to play smaller games (1000-1250-1500), and i've actually started playing Warmachine and that's pretty cool. so i've lost a bit of my interest in 40K, what with the Uber prices and the collecting of millions of models that require a trailer to haul to a game... but i won't sell my army, i've enjoyed painting it too much... i'm attached to my guards.

i did have one question for all of you, if you're slowly losing interest in playing 5th edition, why doesn't anyone just play one of the older editions? i'd love to eventually try a 3rd edition or 4th edition to see how different it really is (if you don't like Super Mario Galaxy, you can alway go back and play Mario 3, right?)

its my understanding that some folk do get in some games of 3rd ed.

The complicating part is that you need a copy of the old rules as well as the old codices and models, and then remember how that version works.

Super mario 3 is a much simpler game than galaxy. the same cannot be said for warhams. I would even liken it to trying to find an online game of Modern Warfare 2. Everyone moves up as the new version is released, forcing those who are comfortable where they are to either take the plunge or get left behind alone.

IMO, it is the general interest in tabletop gaming is losing its touch, esp in younger generations, why spend all the effort and money when u can have similar fun in tha pc version of Dawn of war or space marine... and with MMORPG become ever so popular... not to mention the other games like BF3 and SKyrim which just take ur breathe away.. the table top gaming just require too much and reward too little for most part.

"table top gaming just require too much and reward too little for most part."

i tend to disagree here, i find that even just moving a unit of models is highly rewarding, to see your little dudes get into position to either deal or eat gunfire... i haven't found the same level of satisfaction of advancing and attacking with units in any video game i've played. games today tend to be a little too easy, just walk and shoot, and a lot of games are getting to be just you walking through the environment.

having to use your instinct to determine if you think you have enough reach to shoot at an enemy or if you'll miss, or to try and look through your model's LOS and seeing that ugly ork acrosse the way, it's just so much fun.

plus the inner artist in me is happy as peach about having to build and paint models!! woohoo!

here's an interesting question, are people shying away from 40k becuase of the game, or because of GW with their supposedly untested rules, overpricing of simple items (glue and paint comes to mind GW @ 5.50 for 12ml or P3 @ 3.50 for 18ml, hum...), bad wording and confusing ruleset.

like i mentioned earlier, i've started my army a year ago, but i saw Warhammer about 15 years ago in a comic shop and was instantly dragged in, but lacked any kind of funds to play. now i make money, so it's not so much a problem, but it's still super expensive. i bought my army, and now i don't think it's all that good so i need to invest in more models, and i simply can't afford it. (I need 2-3 leman russes @ 60$ each vs Warmachine's I need a Sniper unit that cost me 20$)

oh and one more thing that i'm not too fond of concerning 40K, 72" reach weapons. what's the point of a 4x6 table if there's nowhere to hide from such reach? why not just make it so it hits anything anywhere? it seems that the table size is correct for the amount of models fielded, but that the distances seem a tad bit too long. Correct me anyone if i'm wrong, but i'd think the game would be more fun if they would cut down on everything measured by half. no more 24" boltgun shiots, make it 12.

Chooka mentioned that he recently took part in an Apoc game at your place. I could get in on that action.
