There is an issue with finecast, the issue is unquantified but it exists. Some percentage of models are not up to standard and some of those models are very noticeably miss-cast.

My question is why did GW allow this, its a process that is repeated, design your process repeat it and test it. Get it working right before you go into mass production. There will always be flaws but look at a 6 Sigma process and tell me GW cant do a better job. Whats the "flaw rate" on forgeworld resin models?

True.dat -- customers should not be your quality control process; way too expensive and creates a bad experience. Time to dig up some 6-sigma ninjas and fix it.

Having worked professionally with both plastic injection molding, metal castings and low temperature setting polymers (i.e.: Resins), I would be surprised if GW did not have a much higher defect rate with finecast than they did with their pewter. I am not going to bore you on the details, but GW would either have to take a significant yield hit by dumping defective parts or they could simply let more defective parts reach the consumer. You could limit the yield hit by using more expensive tools, but there is no way that resins will every approach cast metal parts in terms of repeatability or quality.

The problem with doing a 6 sigma quality control (or other better systems (I worked for Japanese companies, they systems blow six sigma our of the water) on miniatures is that just about all criteria are either way too expensive to measure in a production environment, or have to be subjective in nature. And if they are subjective in nature, and the production manager is getting pressure to keep yields up, you can expect crap to get out.

Another thing that my shed a bit of light.. who says they didnt test it, but the manufactured ones aren't the same exactly as the tested protoypes?

I say this because, remember when GW went with the screw top paint pots? I recall at the first GT I ever went to, Jervis Johnson was there and he kept having to answer "Jervis, why do these new paint pots SUCK!?!" And what he told everyone was that the ones they got from testing were great. They could hurl them at a wall, and they wouldnt crack or anything. Then the production batches came out, and the lids weren;t as good.

Perhaps they did testing, and the production ones arent as good? Who knows. Also, do we know if maybe the finecast production facility, is it in the UK>? Or Malaysia? I know FoW quality control took a bit of a hit when they started making the models in Malaysia rather than NZ for the first while. You gotta be stern with those Malaysian orphan kids about what a Tiger barrel looks like!!

That comment basically epitomizes the point of this thread. Seeing 12 snails in your lifetime doesn't neccessarily mean you've seen them all.

couldn't have said it better myself 8-)

Actually that comment is about the exact opposite of the point of this thread...I should know I started the thing :)
