While I'm going to be on a train heading out of town on Saturday, I'd love to get a game going with you when I get back in a week.

Also, hopefully I'll see you at the Heavy Gear meetup on the 3rd Saturday this month. :)

I only just saw this now, I'm afraid. But I will of course be at Fandom on the 21st, and there should be some other players as well. What's the TV of your army?

I just got what is in the CEF starter box so 12 flail 4 of them with heavy weapons, that special flail model forgot its name but it as to be alone, 2 light hover tanks and 2 hover armored transport.

I assembled everything to be 100% exact to the box picture seeing as I don't know yet what is good or not so i trust the box will show a noob friendly setup.

I read up on it bit by bit every night but maybe its just me that is too used to a GW codex but having a bit describe rules show a portion of each army then more rules then a different part of each army rince and repeat feels somewhat clumsy to me but I am getting used to that way of building a rule book.

Assuming I read up on it properly I'll give you a tally later tonight.

Still trying to rap my head around army composition but it could be on the other rule book I got.

I started with the returns to cats's eye book cause according to the paper inside the box it was what DP9 recommend for noobies.

The "special FLAIL" is called a Morganna-class (the main one being Mordred-class, and the squad leader being Jan-class) they're stealthy infiltrators and snipers. Also those aren't transports, the CEF starter comes with HC-3A Command Cars, rules for which originally appeared in the book Terra Nova Gambit, but from what I've read the starter should have a special "appendix" that includes stats for them and the Kommando Frame squad (which was in Shattered Peace). The transports are the Pacifier Class HPC-64 Hover Transport

Looking at the cover of the Starter kit that's not really the best loadout. It's not horrible, but there are certainly better loadouts you could arrange for. For starters (har har) to make that arrangement legal you've got to upgrade at least one of the LHTs with FLAILs so that they're a specialist choice and field the army at PL3, that or you need to buy either another Core choice (3 more LHTs or a GREL platoon) to field it at PL2 or an Auxiliary choice (HT-68/72 or Interdiction Frame Squad) to field it at PL3. Personally, the FLAIL upgrade is a touch overpriced, but it'll save you real $$ so it might be worth it for the moment, until you get your bearings a little better.

The HC-3s on the starter set have been given AGM(the missle pod on top) and only one's been given comm upgrade (the electronics dome on the front). Which is a foolish loadout. The "Windtalker" HC-3A is without a doubt the best scout and Electronic Warfare platform in Heavy Gear. It'll leave the fastest gears in the dust, +5 Comm plus it's ECM/ECCM ratings means that you'll be making almost any EW roll at +8 (which is crazy, next best is the northern Weasel at +6 and it's absolute bleeding edge Terra Novan tech). It's got tissue paper armour, however. To quote Sgt. Unther from the Mechwarrior2: Mercenaries tutorial mission "You go slow you die." Which means that generally any time you might want to fire that missile, you're better off going top speed and either sat-uplinking for a command point on the squad leader, spotting something for someone else's indirect fire, or saving your action to keep your opponent from spotting something of yours.

If I was going to build that force under current TVs I'd build it to 800TV, give the LHTs Squad Leader Ld 2, the second squad member the FLAIL upgrade with a LLC, The FLAILs all with Light Mortars and leave the Morganna out, Army Commander in the HC-3s, give both of them the comm upgrade and every LD and EW upgrade available, and the CGL a Satalite Uplink.

There is also a set of "Field testing" Threat Value updates in Gear Up 5 that really fixes some of the cost oddities (i.e. over-priced-ness) the CEF was previously subjected to. If you use those values I'd go to 750TV, same basic layout, except add in the Morganna with an Anti-Gear rifle, add AP charges to both LHTs and upgrade the second one to an LLC, and give the Army Commander's HC-3 the Stealth(2) upgrade. (stealth(2)'s not worth much, but there's not much else to give that last 5TV to)

Ok, I'm lost.

The more I read these rule books the more confused I get.

For starters I cannot find the rules for the HC-3A Command Cars which is starting the really frustrate me.

I am really going to need assistance here cause unlike what that DP9 paper inside the starter box said this thing is anything but user friendly I have no clue what I'm doing the more I read the more lost I feel.

That`s the thing where to start.

The revised field manual that part is ok its that blasted return to cat`s eye book could it be any more confusing why disperse model description all over the book would bunching it up together be more easy on the new players plus why do I have2 models with no rules or stats for them like what to they do shoot rainbows out of there rectum while going Whooo ah! like i dunno and its starting to drive me bonkers.

The HC-3s were originally in Terra Nova Gambit alongside the Utopia units. The starter sets are supposed to come with a special appendix that details the rules of that and the Kommando Squad. I'm not sure if it would be in one of the books (maybe the back of the RtCE book) or a separate pamphlet. If you don't seem to have it at all I'd recommend contacting Robert at rdubois@dp9.com. At very least he can tell you where in the package it should be, and if yours was missing it he can get you a replacement. If absolutely nothing else the datacards for the HC-3s will be in the back of the Field Manual.

In terms of army construction, yeah, the DP9 books aren't the greatest for that, but you can get Gear Garage for free over here, which lets you build armies quick and easy. It's a sanctioned fan project, so it's not perfect, but any errors it has get fixed relatively quickly.

For crying out loud I download gear garage and I dunno why I'm surprise at this point its my typical luck the friggen HC-3A Command Cars is not in the program and I check my box and I don't have that extra which is suppose to give me the details I need for that model.

From the looks of it I'll have to email DP9 which I wanted to avoid as I always loath dealing with any customer support but I guess I have to do what I got to do.

EDIT: Nvm found it. I check the DP9 board before and found a answer to my question 6 pages 5 of them is for utopia forces and 6 pages show the HC-3A Command Cars but its mark under a different name only by reading the fluff that I see its alternative name. I must say its really misleading as I was expecting the unit entry to be called HC-3A Command Cars but it actually was called CEF rapid reconnaissance and patrol squadron on the table of content page.

Like yeah way to confuse a new reader oh well no harm done I guess since I found what I was looking but still all that trouble.

EDIT 2: BTW when it says Elite and special is it because that unit can field both roles and I chose which role I want it to fill?
